How to fix IE7 & IE8 Windows Live OneCare script error preventing the scanner from running
Do you get this script error when you try and run the Windows Live OneCare safety scanner?
Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page.
Line: 1
Char: 1
Error: Invalid character
Code: 0
URL: res://C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\wlscBase.dll/script_hig.js
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
The cause of this error has been traced to an Adobe Reader Internet update which was found to have changed a setting in the Internet Options security settings.
To correct this issue, select TOOLS>Internet Options>Advanced tab. Scroll down to the "Security" heading and un-check the tick box next to “Allow active content to run in files on My Computer”. This is the second tick box down from the top. You will have to scroll down through the headings because the Security heading is almost at the bottom of the window.
I have read that there is also a long winded registry fix for this problem which is described on some Internet forums, but it only serves to accomplish the same thing as unticking the box mentioned above. I do not recommend that make any changes to your computer's registry because it can render your PC unusable.
After you change the setting, please click on this URL link to directly access the scanner at Microsoft.
